Independence Day

Independence Day

With this inaugural post, Liberty Defense wishes all a blessed and joyous Independence Day.  Today we celebrate our victory in the War of Independence and the revolutionary but fragile ideas that keep our country exceptionally free and prosperous.  Despite all of the challenges facing our world and our country, any candid student of history must acknowledge no age that has come and gone would be preferable to our era.  Although technological progress has allowed more of us to live longer and healthier lives with reduced physical burdens and more extravagant forms of entertainment, the establishment and advancement of Liberty in the modern era profoundly distinguishes us from the lives of the ancients, our medieval ancestors, our colonial Founders, and indeed any prior generation in our nation’s history.  The continuing flowering of Liberty and its expansion to more citizens and more spheres of our personal lives is a wonder to be celebrated.  And yet, the foundations of Liberty are under a sustained and comprehensive assault, often in ways neither appreciated nor widely discussed and for the sake of policies pursued by fellow citizens with benevolent intentions.  It is a sobering fact that taking up the cause of Liberty may provoke not only the hostility of neighbors, but our government as well.  But the risk is well worth the reward.  Which bring us to what a proper celebration of Independence Day should include: an appreciation of the thrilling expansion of Liberty that has been hundreds if not thousands of years in the making, the price many paid to bring us the rights we cherish, and a solemn re-dedication to defend what we have inherited to, in the poetic words of the Preamble to the Constitution, “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”
